This year’s theme will enable us to focus on more fully on the
temple.
To introduce the theme at
New Beginnings in January, we are going to have the girls all wear
white dresses and white stockings. We are making a stand-up Temple
out of white foam board, with a couple of shadow box windows
depicting the Savior inside the temple teaching first a small group
of people through one window, and a young bride sitting in the next
window looking up as he speaks to her. These will be more like
silhouettes behind vellum panes with a little back light. I have a
picture of the Salt Lake double doors which can be copied and
applied to the cardboard doors so that they open to the outstretched
arms of a small Christus
statue.
As an earlier activity we will decorate small cylinder
boxes made to look like cup cakes. Inside the box will be small
favorites of each girl’s choosing. She may keep quotes, goals, a
prayers etc inside her cupcake. Throughout the coming year, we will
each add to the boxes special thoughts, compliments, and little
notes of encouragement one to another—unsigned- to be read
periodically as a group. The top of each cupcake box will be
‘frosted’ in white, or pastel pink, blue or yellow..
The girls will be given lace overlays, pearls, beads, etc. in which
they will garnish their boxes.
During New Beginnings, they
will each carry their cupcake box and state a short goal or
scripture that has impressed them regarding our theme. We will then
have seven short vignettes ( 1 to 2
lines) using examples of virtuous thinking: 1.a virtuous example,
2.virtuous choices, 3.desiring virtue over current trends
4.exercising virtue thru patience 5. Learning
virtue through committed scripture study 6.
learning the virtues of womanhood and
motherhood 7 Learning the connection between virtuous thinking and
self-worth.
We will focus on the first
song of the new CD.
Daughter of a King and
the last song which is
Keepers
of His Light.
The leaders will make up
small white crowns sprinkled with some shimmer dust for them to wear
as they sing the first song. The last song we hope to
have the YW torches
made from cone shaped construction paper and either ribbons or
streamers (glued to pipe cleaners for stiffness) acting as the
flames of the motto torch.. The beehives may do a medley of “I love
to see the Temple”
and
a child’s
prayer.
Then we will have the stake
leader speak about feeding the little sheep of the fold, service
work and helping others who may be outside of our comfort zones and
how we can overcome these drawbacks through prayer, which is an act
of virtue.
The bishop will speak to
the YW on the value of temples, the work that is performed in it and
the wonders of being sealed eternally to someone you love.
Each girl will be provided
with a pink soap in the shape of a crown and reminded to stay clean
by allowing virtue to garnish their thoughts continuously.
