We did boot camp last year. We did tie dyed
t-shirts...... but instead of using tie dye stuff, we bought army green shirts, and then
laid leaves and twigs on them, and sprayed them with a bleach solution. They turned out
really cute. Then we bought dog tags and had them engraved with our theme and ward name.
We also did a fun good prank to each of the other wards. We called it "You've been
Booted" We took old tall rubber work boots, and cleaned them up. Then we put a
garbage sack inside of them and filled them with all kinds of goodies, candy, toy
soldiers, and small rocks that we had painted and put a smiley face on, with a cute
saying. Then late each evening we would sneak out and put the boot, and a whole bunch of
boots cut out of construction paper around the camps, with a sign that
said....."You've been booted." It was so much fun and the girls loved it.
Our ward had been known for the ward that pulled the pranks... before I got in as camp
director... And I wanted to give them something to sneak and do without it being a harmful
prank. We also made friendship bracelets out of beads. Each girl got one color of beads,
and then they were told that they could either learn to all be of one squad (and have a
colorful bracelet) ... or they could stay to themselves and have just one color. That
worked out great! You make the bracelets with seed beads, fish line and a fish swivel....
Cheap Cheap Cheap... and they loved it.
As far as certification goes... I have found that first aid certification is the hardest.
So the past two years... we have certified everyone in one evening with the help of the
local EMT's. I made up a list for the girls and the EMT's that tells exactly what needs to
be done at each station... and then everyone has the right info. We can certify every girl
in under an hour and a half.
