I know that you have speakers coming to talk with your kids about
dating, you might try what our ward did. However, we showed a video
rather than have speakers. Our ward showed the video by John G.
Bytheway, "Gospel Standards for Youth". We had parents and youth watch
it together. Then after viewing the video, the kids wrote down
questions, or concerns they were having in keeping the standards. The
Young Women gave their questions to the YW presidency and the YM gave
theirs to YM Presidency.
Then we separated the groups. We had the YM go into one room the YW
went to another and the parents remained in the chapel. We felt the YW
would be more open to discussion when they weren't with their parents
or YM. The bishop lead a discussion with the parents, and his
counselors lead discussions with the youth, (along with the presidency
YM/YW) During the classroom change, the YW presidency read all the
questions/concerns the girls had, and sorted through the questions so
their wouldn't be repeats of the same question, an also to take out
silly things that kids just say and do. This made it easier for the
leader of the discussion, as he only received questions that were
pertaining to the standards. It was an excellent night, the
discussions in each group were very direct, and we all felt that the
girls had benefited.
I popped in on both YW and the adults group, and found that the
parents were also very thoughtful about the video, they realized that
they sometimes lowered the standard because it was easier, and then
later regretted it. If you haven't seen the talk I highly recommend
it. He discusses what a standard is and why we should keep it, as well
as relating stories from the scriptures in a humorous way that the
kids can relate to. He covers dress standards, and dating standards.
The kids had a great time, and I believe came away thinking they
could keep the standards, and be choose to be close to the Lord even
though it is hard.
The talk we showed will be shown on March 5th and March 27th on the
BYU Broadcasting station. We came to the conclusion that all the youth
of the church should see this, so you may want to have it shown at
another meeting if you can't use it for Standards Night. By-the-way
you will probably want to have the meeting be a little longer than
usual since the video is about 50 minutes long (if I remember
correctly). Good Luck it is such an important topic for the youth.
Several people have asked about the talk by John Bytheway on Gospel
values. Here is where I got my information. I watched it on the
Direct TV on the BYUTV channel. I found the showings at
www.BYUbroadcasting.org/findatalk I typed in Bytheway
where it asked for the speakers last name and it opened another window
that gave me four choices of talks, the last one being Gospel Values
for Youth. On the far right click on search listings, and it will tell
you when the program is rebroadcast.
You can hear the talk if you go to
http://byubroadcasting/edweek/ then change the year to 1998, and
scroll down to the talk "Gospel Values for Youth" by John Bytheway
this is only the audio version.
I hope that this will help.
