Our stake YW
leaders used shoes as a way to introduce their chosen theme for 2001,
which comes from the scripture in Alma 37:6, "By small and simple things
are great things brought to pass." They had a display of many different
types and sizes of shoes, from some teeny little pink baby shoes to some
HUGE size 15 basketball high top sneakers. The tiniest ones were near
the big ones, and it really made a visual impact!
The stake focused on how GREAT our YW can become and what great things
they can do with their lives if they will just do the important simple
little things each day. They gave examples of seemingly small things
that progressed into amazing things. For example, how a tiny seed blooms
into a beautiful flower, how simple little Lego bricks can create
intricate structures when combined with other bricks. How a simple farm
boy from Vermont became the prophet responsible for the restoration. The
first vision was preceded by small and simple things (prayer, faith).
Laman and Lemuel saw angels and amazing things, but because they ignored
small and simple things, they didn't understand.
The greatest thing (exaltation) will come to those who master the small
things!
The leaders gave out two favors that evening. One was a little homemade
soap formed in the shape of a footprint (probably done with a cookie
cutter) and wrapped in cellophane and ribbon. This went along with a
talk on important footsteps on our way to greatness: faith, testimony,
service, prayer, obedience, scriptures, leadership, love, etc.
The second favor was a $100 Grand chocolate bar with a note attached to
it: "By small and simple things are 'GRAND' things brought to pass!
Alma 37:6 (note the taking of poetic license!).
The leaders read a neat quote by Brigham Young that I'll paraphrase
here, something to the effect of: 'Our lives are made up of small and
simple things by themselves, but when put together with other simple
things, they become huge!"
