One of the wards in our
stake had truly caught the vision of what New Beginnings was all about and did an
excellent job of taking the opportunity to teach at their New Beginnings. The cultural
hall was set up to look somewhat like a living room (couch, chair, lamp, piano, etc.) The
program was based all around a Family Home Evening with the Bishop sitting on the couch
conducting the FHE. One of the YW leaders gave announcements and calendaring for the year.
For the lesson a Laurel talked about one of her projects, a leader briefly told about the
program, a Mia Maid and Beehive also very briefly took some time, but. . . the very best
part of the evening was a hands on experience. For the activity part of the lesson, each
girl had brought her personal progress book. The girls with her parents each went to
different tables that had a picture of that family on the table and they were given about
15 minutes to work on personal progress together (YW, mother and father). I think this was
probably the very first time some of the fathers had even seen the personal progress book.
There was a lot accomplished, many goals set and talked about. Then they all got back
together and for the game part of FHE. They had made a large jeopardy game with the seven
value colors across the top and the categories and questions all had to do with YW's and
Personal Progress. It was a wonderful evening and it wasn't just a program, but a lot was
taught, learned and accomplished with the "hands on experience".
