Contributed by: Kathy in Madrid, Spain katrinka@deseretmail.comThe story that
came across the list on May 15 "The Daffodil Principle" is wonderful for
goal setting. It may be a little more for grown-ups but maybe you could
fictionalize the story and help them to realize the importance of
planting "one bulb at a time" and the vision of the final result. If you
do not have a copy it can be found in the in the book "Celebration" by Jaroldeen Asplund Edwards available on
the Gospel Links CD Rom Library. There is even a pattern for a paper daffodil in the May
1985 Friend the web page for the pattern is: http://library.lds.org/library/lpext.dll/ArchMagazines/Friend/img/img00599.jpg?f=templates&fn=document-frame.htm&2.0

To help the girls in our ward to set goals we have implemented schedule of interviews that
includes one 3 months after their birthdays to set their goals with the PP advisor. These
are recorded in their books on the Personal Progress Record Sheet (the last page in new
the books, make copies if the girls do not have one and keep a copy with the PP advisor or
Presidency member). She initials their books to the left of the goals they have set but
changes are allowed.
By knowing the experiences chosen by the girls the PP nights can be used to complete value
experiences as a group (for example create value flags, a Mia Maid experience). We allow
the girls from other age groups the 'write in' option for these experiences. If planned
well in advance the 'goal' is set even if done in a group setting.
The point is to have the experience and to focus on the value. Most value experiences need
a report of some kind (record in journal, report to parents, class or YW leader) to
complete the experience. In this way they are reflecting on the value and the lessons
learned from the experience. Our leaders are reminded to ask the girls about their
experience and how the felt and what they did. We sometimes get in a hurry to sign PP
books and forget this very vital step.
