Missionary Month

I thought I'd share what we are in the midst of right now... we have allocated a month (or three weeks) to calling our youth on missions (this is a YM/YW activity). The kick-off starts with a missionary fireside, we have our Stake Mission Leader or the Mission President come and speak to our youth about missionary work. At the end of the evening each youth gets their mission call (letter) and their tag. We have a world map that shows their missions and we will display this on our bulletin board throughout the month. We've done the fireside on a Sunday evening or a mutual night.

The second week is the MTC they are given the discussion pamphlet (ordered from the dist. ctr.), given their companions, break out into groups and are taught the discussion from recently returned missionaries to stake and ward mission leaders or YM leaders.

The third week is their P-DAY. Last year we did some games that helped them w/ their ironing, laundry, grocery shopping etc. We then played a team game. This year our ward roller-skating party landed right near the date so we are using that as our P-DAY. We are encouraging the youth to invite their friends.

The fourth week is the dinner & discussion. This evening we meet in a central location, start with prayer and missionary song. The youth are then picked up by their host families and they serve them dinner (it is nice if they do an authentic meal from the country they are hosting) and then the youth give the discussion to the family. After dinner & discussion the youth are returned to the church for a testimony meeting conducted by the priest and laurel class presidents.

This is our second year, our youth are learning the 2nd discussion this year. I probably won't be in next year, but I sure hope this continues. The kids have really enjoyed this, the spirit in our testimony meeting at the end has been wonderful and really had the kids thinking about missionary work and their part.

If anyone is interested I have several documents in MSword (tags, call letter., miss. prep list). It takes some time between missions, companionships, members home for dinner, but it is well worth it! We do the bulk of it and have the YM leaders do the MTC night.
