Excerpts from Janette C. Hales (Oct. 1992)
"How many of you have ever dipped a candle? You take a string
and dip it in the wax; it comes out and it looks like there's nothing on it. You dip it
again and it still looks like there's nothing on it. You dip it, and dip it, and dip it.
You think, "This is impossible", but it's like growing up. You have to do things
over and over and practice and practice. Everything you do with a young person that gives
them an EXPERIENCE in living the gospel or applying faith in their lives is like another
dip of the string to make a candle.
WE don't just choose faith when we're baptized then we're through
with that. I believe throughout our lives circumstances will change; over and over again
we choose faith. We choose again to apply the principles of the gospel.
Do you remember what happened in the lives of the sons of Mosiah?
THEY WAXED STRONG in the knowledge of the truth (Alma 17:2-3) That's where the candles
come in!!! Every experience a young person has in living the gospel is like on more dip of
the candle. The sons of Mosiah waxed strong in righteousness. How? By much prayer, much
fasting, and be searching the scriptures. Then the blessings came. That's what we want for
our young people. WE WANT THEM TO WAX STRONG IN FAITH, BUT THEY MUST HAVE EXPERIENCES OVER
AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER IN APPLYING FAITH.
This is heavy stuff. It's mature. It's the plan of salvation. I
believe our young people can understand it, and as they do, it will help them deal with
the reality of their lives amid the confusion of the world."
Use a candle as a visual aid or even dip a candle as you speak
about this. It's very effective.
